Moonshine flavoring

When you think about the fact that you want to get some other strong drink from moonshine, do not forget that moonshine is a rather specific product. It will be very difficult to get rid of its pungent odor, which appears at the production stage. But if the smell cannot be removed, you can always work on it, making it more pleasant and suitable for the drink you want to end up with. This is done using special aromatic additives.

Additives that can affect the smell of moonshine are usually divided into natural and artificial, depending on the method of their production. It is important to remember that artificial additives can be dangerous to the health and life of the consumer, so if you are new to this business, it is better not to mess with them and use natural flavors of a natural nature. They can be obtained from almost any available plant material.

A wide variety of plants can help you improve the aroma of moonshine: dill, bay leaf, marjoram, cardamom, vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, mustard, anise, nutmeg and many, many others. To decide which of the products listed above you should use, remember what kind of drink you want to get from your moonshine. For cognac, cinnamon or oak bark are best; for rum, it would be better to use anise or nutmeg. If you are a whiskey lover, use cardamom or vanilla in your work.

The meaning of drinks prepared with moonshine

Someone might think that the only thing that can be achieved with the help of strong drinks obtained from moonshine is stable alcoholic intoxication. Actually this is not true. Today, doctors confirm that moonshine drinks prepared at home can have a strong positive effect on human health. This can be explained by the fact that the substances used to make moonshine (hawthorn, honey, eleutherococcus) themselves have medicinal properties, providing a tonic effect on the heart, blood vessels, and pancreas. By becoming part of alcoholic beverages, they preserve them and bring the consumer not only joy, but also significant benefits.

Making whiskey at home

According to statistics, it is whiskey that alcohol lovers most often try to obtain from moonshine. To do this, you need to add to the drink distilled just once. honey at the rate of 50 grams per 3 liters, one pinch of vanilla, 50 grams of chocolate and a little cinnamon. If you don’t have chocolate at home, you can replace it with toffee without losing quality.

The resulting mixture should be left alone for 3 days, giving it time to brew. Then all that remains is to dilute the drink with cold water and re-distill the resulting liquid.

Gin at home

In order to get real gin from moonshine, you need to add for 3 liters of alcohol 350-450 grams of juniper. Of course, before this, the berries need to be thoroughly mashed. The product should be infused for at least 14 days. Depending on your taste preferences you can add cinnamon, coriander or lemon zest to it. After two weeks, it remains to distill the result again. It is unlikely that you will be able to recreate the taste of store-bought gin, but the result will not be similar to moonshine. The tart and dry taste of the resulting low-alcohol drink will, first of all, evoke associations with gin.

Making rum

In order to make rum from moonshine, it is enough to know one more simple recipe. To 3 liters of moonshine you need to add grapefruit and 200 grams of raisins. Any variety will do, but if every flavor is important to you, white raisins are best. The sour grapefruit notes will make the resulting drink similar to real rum. The product is infused for at least 14 days, and carefully using a special type of sugar, as in the case of whiskey, it can be easily given the required color.

Rum can be used to make a great cocktail: Rum Mojito Recipe.

Making cognac at home

Unlike all previous recipes, for cognac you will need moonshine distilled at least twice. In 3 liters of this drink you need to add black pepper, bay leaf, tea, coffee, soda, vanilla and sugar. The resulting mixture must be placed on the stove and brought to a boil. After the solution boils, the stove must be turned off to allow the liquid to cool. By subsequent filtering and dilution, you will bring your cognac to the required classic strength of 40 degrees.

This is not the only cognac recipe suitable for making moonshine in the kitchen of your home. According to other recipes, instead of tea and coffee, oak bark, galangal, prunes and other oriental spices should be used for the base. If the first option will resemble cheap store-bought cognac, then in the 2nd you will easily notice the resemblance to an elite perennial drink.

Calvados at home

Calvados, obtained from moonshine, is ideal for lovers of sweet, low-alcohol drinks. The recipe for getting it is not difficult: The moonshine available at home needs to be mixed with double-distilled apple and pear wine. Making Calvados is a fairly lengthy process, so be patient. You will have to wait about a month for the drink to infuse. Then you need to distill the result again, and you can safely enjoy homemade Calvados.

Making absinthe at home

If Calvados will satisfy the needs of lovers of low-alcohol drinks, then absinthe will be more suitable for lovers of strong drinks. To make absinthe you will need a wide variety of herbs. Most often, manufacturers use anise, coriander, angelica, lemon balm, and mint, but by searching for information on the Internet, you can find many analogues for each ingredient. You can mix them in completely different proportions - it all depends on your personal taste preferences.

Absinthe production begins by soaking dried wormwood in prepared moonshine. Only after keeping the drink in this form for 3 days, you can add all the other herbs to it. By waiting another 5 days, you will get the perfect absinthe, the strength of which can reach 70 degrees. Be careful when drinking this drink: in large quantities it can be hazardous to health.

Making brandy at home

Making brandy from moonshine is probably the easiest alcoholic recipe imaginable. It is enough to distill grape or any other fruit wine twice, and the desired result will be achieved. It is unlikely to closely resemble a store-bought product, but the amount of money you spend on homemade brandy will be significantly less than you could spend on a purchased analogue.

Moonshine tinctures

As noted above, moonshine tinctures can have a strong positive effect on the health of the consumer. That is why they are in such high demand among Russians. Such public interest, in turn, explains the huge variety of recipes for moonshine liqueurs: there are about a hundred of them in total.

One of the most popular options is the classic lemon tincture. As you can easily guess from the name, the recipe is based on adding lemon zest to moonshine. The result is not very strong, which is why it is especially loved by connoisseurs of low-alcohol drinks.

To achieve mint tincture, It is enough to replace the lemon zest with 100 grams of mint and add dill, juniper and cinnamon to the moonshine. This drink will be stronger, and the juniper will provide a pleasant tart aftertaste that will stay with you for several hours.

Russia is a rather cold country. Often alcohol is consumed there just to keep warm. Pepper tincture is perfect for this purpose. The warming effect is due to 20 grams of black pepper, which penetrates to the very bones. Recommended only for lovers of the strongest drinks. The warming effect is achieved due to its high strength and lasts for several hours.

To prepare wormwood tincture, in addition to wormwood itself, you need to add anise to the moonshine. But to get a rowan drink, you don’t need anything other than the berries themselves. Both wormwood and rowan tinctures are not the most strong drinks and are perfect for home feasts.

In conclusion, I would like to summarize all of the above. Moonshine is a truly unique alcohol. No other option simply gives the consumer such a wide range of drinks that can be made from it. With all this diversity, we do not forget that moonshine can be consumed in its original form. The main thing is not to get carried away with alcohol. Use it for fun holidays, fighting frosts and for medicinal purposes. After all, alcohol should bring joy, not sorrow and problems.

Making whiskey at home is not as difficult or impossible as it might seem at first glance. The greatest similarity can be achieved by using grain moonshine and simulating aging in a barrel. Interestingly, the most labor-intensive stage will be the preparation of the required wood. In this case, neither bark nor sawdust will do. You need oak blocks or pegs. At the preparatory stage you will need:

  • oak block;
  • baking soda - 2 tbsp. spoons;
  • water - 10 liters.

You need to cut pegs from the timber, the size of which depends on the size of the container intended for the subsequent aging of whiskey. The length of the pegs should be 2/3 of the height of the container. In cross-section they should not exceed the diameter of the neck of the vessel. Typically a length of 10 - 15 cm with a diameter of up to 3 cm is suitable.

The chopped pegs are soaked in water for 24 hours. During this time, the water should be changed at least four times. Now the pegs should be soaked in a soda solution prepared with 5 liters of water. After a five-hour soda bath, boil the pegs in clean water for at least an hour, and then rinse thoroughly under running water. Dry it in the open air.

After the water test comes the fire test. Oak blanks need to be baked, so to speak about wood, in the oven. To do this, we wrap each stick individually on all sides with foil so that there is no gap left. Place in a preheated oven for 2 - 3 hours. The temperature chosen depends on the desired result. Heating to 150° will give an oak aroma, at 200° vanilla notes appear, and after 250° almond notes are pronounced. At the very end, the toasted pegs will need to be scorched on all sides.

Now you can finally move on to a more enjoyable, albeit long, stage - making whiskey. To do this you will need:

  • prepared oak pegs - 200 grams;
  • granulated sugar - 2 tbsp. spoons.

Place the pegs in a container, pour in moonshine and add sugar. It is better that the liquid almost completely fills the vessel and leaves no free space. Therefore, if necessary, the amount of initial ingredients can be increased while maintaining the proportions. The drink needs to be aged for at least four months, ideally half a year or even a year. After the mandatory minimum period has passed, you can periodically make samples to achieve the desired taste. To stop infusion, the drink must be separated from the pegs and filtered.

Rum from moonshine

The most famous attribute of pirate romance also did not become an obstacle for the creative and inventive moonshiner. Of course, it is important to understand that this drink cannot be fully called rum. It is rather a rhum-imitating tincture. Real rum is distinguished by raw materials - a special black molasses and multi-level distillation. But the resulting drink is very suitable for cocktails. So, you will need:

  • moonshine diluted to 45°-50° - 2 liters;
  • granulated sugar - 2 tbsp. spoons;
  • oak bark - 1 tbsp. spoon;
  • vanilla sugar - 1 gram;
  • ground coffee - 1 gram.

Oak bark, just like the recipe for Latgale cognac, must be prepared in advance: soak in boiling water for 10 - 15 minutes.

First you need to fry the sugar to get caramel. Must be used immediately while hot. After cooling it will dissolve much worse. If possible, simple sugar can be replaced with cane sugar. This will help achieve a result closer to Cuban rum.

After preliminary preparation, all components need to be poured with moonshine and stirred until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then remove to infuse. Stir everything constantly for two weeks, and then allow sediment and suspended matter to enter. The drink is filtered and returned to the aging stage. But now only with the addition of bark. The length of aging, as always, only benefits the taste and aroma.

Tequila from moonshine

To make your own analogue of the famous Mexican “cactus vodka”, you don’t need to steal agave from the botanical garden. Almost every home has a lot of it close relative. We are talking about aloe vera. According to the biological classification of species, these two plants belong to the same family. For homemade tequila you will need:

  • moonshine diluted to 45°-50° - 2 liters;
  • aloe vera - 100 grams;
  • granulated sugar - 4 tbsp. spoons.

The technology is quite simple and fast. The leaves of the plant are freed from thorns and cut into large squares. Then, together with sugar, they are poured with moonshine and infused in a cool place for several weeks. It is interesting to watch the color transformations of the drink. Green at the very beginning, over time it becomes slightly golden, reminiscent of golden tequila. To give the drink absolute transparency, you can keep it under direct sunlight for several days. sun rays. The filtered drink after infusion can continue to be stored for a long time.

"Becherovka" from moonshine

When looking for moonshine drinks to make at home, recipes tinctures are definitely in the lead. And this is quite understandable. After all, you can infuse anything into moonshine: fruits, berries, spices, herbs, spices. In a word, everything that has its own distinct taste and aroma and is capable of conveying them to moonshine.

But since we have already followed the path of legendary drinks of world significance, we will not retreat here either. Here is the recipe for the famous Czech liqueur “Becherovka”. Naturally this is one of possible options, of which there are a great many. The main difficulty is a large number of herbs used and difficulties with their dosage. The following recipe is considered the closest:

  • moonshine with a strength of 50°-55° - 2 liters;
  • cinnamon - 7 grams;
  • cloves - 25-30 buds;
  • cardamom - 1.5 grams;
  • anise - 3 grams;
  • black pepper - 10-12 peas;
  • orange zest - 2 grams;
  • granulated sugar - 220 grams;
  • water - 250 ml.

When choosing herbs and spices, it is important to try to find fresh and hand-harvested ones. Bags from the store, ground into powder and dried into dust, will not be able to transfer their natural aromatic substances to the drink. In addition, when using whole cinnamon sticks, clove buds, anise seeds, and cardamom pods, it is much easier to filter the infusion. In this regard, it is better to cut the zest into large squares without capturing the white inner skin.

To make homemade Becherovka, all herbs and spices need to be poured with moonshine and left to steep for at least a week. Then filter the drink, add it to sugar syrup prepared from the specified amount of sugar and water, and keep it for several more days in a tightly closed container.

Having stuffed my hand on ready-made recipes, over time, the moonshiner will begin to create his own homemade drinks, based on his taste and experience.

Preparation of moonshine and alcohol for personal use
absolutely legal!

After the collapse of the USSR, the new government stopped the fight against moonshine. Criminal liability and fines were abolished, and the article banning the production of alcohol-containing products at home was removed from the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. To this day, there is not a single law that prohibits you and me from engaging in our favorite hobby - preparing alcohol at home. This is evidenced by the Federal Law of July 8, 1999 No. 143-FZ “On Administrative Responsibility legal entities(organizations) and individual entrepreneurs for offenses in the field of production and circulation of ethyl alcohol, alcoholic and alcohol-containing products" (Collected Legislation Russian Federation, 1999, N 28, art. 3476).

Extract from the Federal Law of the Russian Federation:

“The effect of this Federal Law does not apply to the activities of citizens (individuals) producing products containing ethyl alcohol for purposes other than sale.”

Moonshining in other countries:

In Kazakhstan in accordance with the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan On administrative offenses dated January 30, 2001 N 155, the following liability is provided. Thus, according to Article 335 “Manufacture and sale of home-made alcoholic beverages”, illegal production of moonshine, chacha, mulberry vodka, mash and other alcoholic beverages for the purpose of sale, as well as the sale of these alcoholic beverages, entails a fine in the amount of thirty monthly calculation indices with confiscation of alcoholic beverages , apparatus, raw materials and equipment for their manufacture, as well as money and other valuables received from their sale. However, the law does not prohibit the preparation of alcohol for personal use.

In Ukraine and Belarus things are different. Articles No. 176 and No. 177 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses provide for the imposition of fines in the amount of three to ten tax-free minimum wages for the production and storage of moonshine without the purpose of sale, for the storage of devices* for its production without the purpose of sale.

Article 12.43 repeats this information almost word for word. “Production or acquisition of strong alcoholic beverages (moonshine), semi-finished products for their production (mash), storage of apparatus for their production” in the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses. Point No. 1 states: “Manufacturing individuals strong alcoholic drinks (moonshine), semi-finished products for their production (mash), as well as storage of devices* used for their production - entail a warning or a fine of up to five basic units with confiscation of these drinks, semi-finished products and devices.”

*You can still purchase moonshine stills for home use, since their second purpose is to distill water and obtain components for natural cosmetics and perfumes.

It's easy to make high quality traditional Russian moonshine. But this is far from the only advantage of home brewing. Moonshine can become the basis for a variety of tinctures, liqueurs and even elite alcohol such as cognac, gin, whiskey, Calvados, etc. In this article we will look at interesting recipes for homemade alcoholic drinks.

"Anisovaya" is a popular type of vodka. Grape moonshine (chacha is the basis for making cognac) is prepared from the waste of grapes pressed into wine (100 g of yeast, 5 kg of sugar and 30 liters of water per squeeze bucket). Braga ferments for 5–7 days in a warm place. After distillation, 7 liters are obtained. chacha, suitable for infusion in oak barrels.

There are also a lot of recipes for making moonshine with the addition of fruits (pears, strawberries, etc.), vegetables (potatoes, carrots, pumpkin), coffee beans and even sweets.

How to prepare tinctures with moonshine?

By default, the recipe uses 0.5 liters. moonshine, other proportions are indicated additionally.

Of course, this is only a small fraction of the recipes for homemade alcoholic drinks. In the next article we will talk about preparing medicinal tinctures.

In previous articles, we talked in detail about the preparation of mash, its clarification, distillation and purification of moonshine. Now we get to the most interesting part - preparing various delicious drinks. Not everyone likes the smell of pure alcohol or moonshine. You need to enjoy the taste and aroma of the drink and get real pleasure from it. You can cook a variety of different ones. This can be an imitation of cognac, whiskey, rum, or tequila. The main thing is to choose the right ingredients. In this article you will find the most successful recipes with precise dosage of additives and preparation technology.

Latgale cognac

Latgalian came to us from the historical region of Latvia. It was there that this world famous drink was invented. This is the most best recipe cognac from moonshine which can be found. Although it is prepared in just a couple of weeks, it is almost identical in taste, color, and aroma to expensive cognacs. There is no shame in serving such a drink to guests. To prepare three liters of cognac you will need the simplest ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. l. oak bark (you can get it in the forest or buy it at a pharmacy)
  • 3 tbsp. l. Sahara
  • On the tip of a knife, ground coriander.
  • 3 buds.
  • 0.5 gr. ground nutmeg

Now let’s move on directly to the technology for preparing cognac:

It reveals its taste gradually, so it is not recommended to consume it immediately. Let it sit in a cool, dark place for a couple of weeks and better than months– then you will appreciate its taste.

Cognac with prunes

Using this recipe you will get a very soft drink, reminiscent of Armenian cognacs in taste. One can note a very balanced taste, an amazing aroma of prunes with spicy notes. First, try making a small batch of 500 ml of moonshine to make sure you like it. For this amount of moonshine take:

  • 5 prunes with pits (choose the most fragrant).
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar.
  • 3 allspice peas.
  • On the tip of a knife.
  • 1 bud.

If you remove the spices, leaving only prunes, you will not get cognac, but also a very worthy drink like slivyanka.

  1. Place chopped spices and pre-washed prunes in a liter jar.
  2. Pour the specified amount of moonshine into it, add vanillin and sugar.
  3. Close the jar with a tight lid, shake well and put it in a dark place.
  4. Leave for 10 days, shaking the contents of the jar periodically.
  5. After 10 days, filter through several layers of gauze or cotton wool so that the drink is completely clear. Pour into bottles and store.

Only three days are enough for the taste to stabilize, but if you keep it longer, the taste will be much higher.

Whiskey

Most people won't be able to tell the difference from the real thing. This is a more complex recipe, but if you love this drink, then your efforts will be completely worth it. It is prepared on oak chips prepared in a special way. To get two liters of an excellent drink you need to get:

  • 150 gr. oak pegs.
  • 2 tbsp. granulated sugar.
  • 1 tbsp. soda
  • 10 liters of water.

Don't be alarmed by the composition - we will need some ingredients solely for preparing the wood. That's where we'll start.

  1. Chop dry oak wood into sticks. Optimal size– length up to 10 cm, cut 2x2 cm.
  2. Put them in cold water, changing it up to four times a day. You need to soak for 24 hours.
  3. Prepare a soda solution - dissolve the specified amount of soda in five liters of water. Place the cubes in it and leave for 6 hours.
  4. Remove the wood from the solution, rinse it very thoroughly, put it in a saucepan, pour water into it and boil for 45 minutes over low heat.
  5. Pour out the water and rinse the wood again.
  6. The processing is not yet complete - now they need to be kept in the sun for 24 hours, then wrapped in several layers of foil and kept in the oven for two hours at a temperature of 150C.
  7. The last stage is to lightly char each block over the fire.

After all this torment, you can proceed directly to preparing the drink, which is much easier and more enjoyable.

  1. Place the prepared cubes in a jar, add the specified amount of sugar and fill it up to the neck with moonshine.
  2. Place in a cool, dark place and take a sample every two weeks. The rate at which the drink matures depends on the quality of the oak and your taste preferences. The optimal result is achieved after 3-7 months.

As a result you get moonshine drink, which is in no way inferior in quality to most whiskeys available in stores.

Rum

- also a worthy recipe. Of course, it will not be real, since cane sugar is used for the original, but the taste will not suffer from this. None of your friends will even guess that they are drinking not real rum, but its imitation from moonshine. To get a liter of rum you will need:

  • 200 gr. granulated sugar
  • 500 ml. water
  • 50 ml rum, 10 ml each pineapple and vanilla essence (they can be found in online stores)
  • 4 teaspoons of burnt sugar.

And now the cooking technology:

  1. Mix water and sugar in a saucepan and put it on fire. You need to heat until completely dissolved, then turn off and add burnt sugar.
  2. While the syrup is cooling, mix moonshine and essence in a separate container.
  3. After the syrup has cooled completely, mix it with flavored moonshine.
  4. Pour into bottles and store in a dark place for a month.

The result is a drink that is balanced in taste and has a pleasant color. Rum lovers will definitely love it.

Absinthe

This is a drink for everyone, but some should be interested in its preparation, since it is not cheap in stores and, in fact, is not real absinthe. Therefore, it turns out even better than store-bought. For a liter of moonshine 45 degrees you need to take:

  • 30 gr. bitter wormwood.
  • 25 gr. seeds and anise.
  • 10 gr. and lemon balm.
  • Half a liter of water.

There are subtleties in preparing the drink:

  1. Pour 2/3 of the herbs and seeds with moonshine and leave to infuse for a week in a cool, dark place.
  2. Add water, mix well and pour into the moonshine still. Yes, this is one of the few recipes that requires another distillation. Remove the steamer from the apparatus immediately, as we need to obtain the maximum amount of aromatic substances. We distill in the traditional way.
  3. After distillation, you will receive an aromatic but clear drink. This does not suit us, since absinthe has green color. Therefore, we chop the remaining herbs and spices well and pour them into a container with a drink. Place the container in warm water for literally 3 minutes. This is enough for absinthe to acquire its characteristic color.
  4. Filter the drink through several layers of gauze, pour into dark glass bottles and store in a cool place for several days.

Tequila

Many people have not even tried the famous drink “tequila”, which is usually drunk with lemon and salt, since its price in stores is, to put it mildly, prohibitive. But there is a recipe by which you can make tequila that tastes close to the original. And for this you need a plant that everyone knows without exception - aloe. Yes, it is prepared on the basis of this plant. For three liters of alcohol you need to take only 3 tsp. granulated sugar and 150 gr. aloe leaves. The cooking technology is also extremely simple.

  1. We cut the leaves into small pieces, put them in a jar and fill them with moonshine.
  2. Sugar is added immediately to soften the taste.
  3. Close with a tight lid, shake well and put away in a cool place for 2-3 weeks. During this time, you may notice that the drink will first acquire a greenish color, which will then change to a pleasant golden hue.
  4. If you want the drink to be absolutely transparent, then simply after filtering, place it in a sunny place for 20 days.

Becherovka

The famous Czech drink is produced in only one place, and its recipe is kept in the strictest confidence. The only thing that can be said about the real recipe is that the drink contains about 20 herbs that grow only in Karlovy Vary. However Becherovka from moonshine tastes as close as possible to the real drink. For a liter of moonshine you need to take:

  • 150 gr. granulated sugar.
  • A quarter liter of water.
  • 2 tsp. orange zest (fresh)
  • 2 pieces of cardamom.
  • 10 things
  • 8 black peppercorns
  • Half a teaspoon of anise.
  • 1 small cinnamon stick.

Preparation:

These wonderful ones can be prepared at home with minimal cost. There are many more wonderful recipes, some created unexpectedly through experimentation. Over time, you will learn to combine ingredients to achieve exactly the taste you like. But first you need to master the preparation of mash and its distillation.
