From May 23, Russian Android phone owners can use the Android Pay service and not carry bank cards with them. To do this, it is only important that your phone meets several requirements:

  1. The Android version on your smartphone must be at least 4.4 (KitKat);
  2. The smartphone must have NFC contactless technology;
  3. The device must not be rooted;
  4. To use the Android Pay service, you must have at least one card from any of these Banks:

There are some restrictions on the use of certain cards in this service. For example, although Sberbank supports Android Pay, it will not be possible to add a Visa Electron and Maestro card to the service, and there may also be restrictions on adding certain debit or credit cards some banks. Here full list types of supported cards in the Android Pay service as of May 29:

This list is subject to change, check it in the official Android Pay help.

What is Android Pay?

Before the launch of Android Pay, only owners of Apple and Samsung could use the contactless payment service using their phone - due to their privilege in the market, they launched their technologies earlier. With the release of Android Pay, all other owners of Android phones can now pay using their smartphones.

Strictly speaking, Samsung Pay and Android Pay are different technologies. The first is patented by Samsung, the second is freely distributed to others Android smartphones. But the essence and the very methodology of using these technologies are practically indistinguishable.

All market participants have high hopes for the Android Pay service, because in fact, the contactless payment function is now available to hundreds of millions of devices. Russian banks also predict a significant increase in contactless transactions this year.

How to add a bank card to Android Pay

1. Download and install the official Android Pay application from the Play Market:

2. Launch the application and on the welcome screen, click “Welcome”:

3. Select “Add card” / “Add another card”:

4. The camera will launch. Place the card in the frame so that the card number is read:

You can enter the card number manually; to do this, click the “Add manually” button.

4. The program will check if at least one protection method is used on the device:

For the application to work, your device must be protected: it must use at least one security method: PIN code, graphic design or fingerprint. This requirement is introduced into Android Pay to directly protect payments and confirm them if necessary.

5. Click “OK” and in the next window select the card confirmation method (usually SMS):

6. Enter the code from the received SMS:

7. A window with the inscription “Android Pay application installed” will notify you that everything is fine:

The last linked card becomes the default payment card. Of course, you can add as many bank cards as you like and set any of them as the default card at any time.

You can also add a card using the Bank’s mobile application, which uses Android Pay. But if you have a lot of cards, and they are all from different Banks, adding them through the Android Pay application will be faster than going into the mobile application of each Bank and adding card after card.

How to pay for purchases using Android Pay

You can pay using Android Pay wherever contactless payment is accepted, including where MasterCard with PayPass and Visa with PayWave are accepted.

The payment terminal may also have an icon:

The official Android Pay help states that to pay using a smartphone:

  1. Unlock your phone
  2. Bring it to the contactless payment terminal
  3. Wait for notification of successful payment:

Thus, neither launching the application itself during payment, nor confirming payment with any PIN code, password or fingerprint is required.

But in fact, payment on different smartphones and terminals can occur in different ways: for example, you may need to enter the card PIN code directly on the terminal, or confirm payment on the device itself. There are even reviews that some purchases can be made even without unlocking the phone screen - by simply holding the smartphone to the payment terminal. Some note that this requires entering a PIN code or unlock code on the phone. In general, there are a lot of variations. No one will tell you in advance how payment will be made directly on your smartphone and in those stores where you are used to making purchases - only practice will help.

Keep in mind that if your smartphone uses several contactless payment methods (for example, Samsung Pay and Android Pay), then payment using Android Pay may not go through if another contactless payment method is activated on the device at the time of payment. Make sure of this in your smartphone settings before paying with your phone.

You can also pay for online purchases using Android Pay. At the moment, there are few online stores that allow you to accept payments using Android Pay, but in the very near future the number of such sites will increase significantly.

To pay for online purchases using Android Pay, select "Android Pay" as the payment method:

This may look different in each specific online store, but the essence is approximately the same.

At the moment, using Android Pay you can pay for purchases made in the Lamoda online store, in the OneTwoTrip, Afisha, Rambler.Kassa, Uber and Kinokhod services:

In the near future, you will be able to pay for purchases using Android Pay from these services:

How safe is it to pay using Android Pay?

This technology has been fully tested and accredited and is considered completely safe. The fact is that for payments using Android Pay, during the registration of your physical bank card, a special, virtual card or virtual account is created, so the data of your real bank card when using Android Pay is not used anywhere, which means it cannot be intercepted by anyone.

But it’s almost impossible to intercept anything when making purchases using Android Pay, because all transactions made contactless are transmitted in encrypted form, and the encryption key for each purchase is unique and is generated every time you bring your smartphone to the payment terminal or make a purchase online. Moreover, only the Bank can decrypt such information and payment system. This data does not remain on any intermediate servers or storage facilities.

For the entire period of using this technology abroad and for the entire period of using similar technologies - Samsung Pay or Apple Pay - in Russia, there has not been a single case of cards being compromised or any fraudulent actions being carried out.

Therefore, you can be absolutely confident in the safety of this technology.

Promotions, discounts and cashbacks when paying with Android Pay

In order to promote the new service, several promotions have been launched at the moment.

1. 50% discount on an Aeroexpress ticket when paying with a MasterCard card using Android Pay at the turnstile at the airport for the first 3,000 people:

This proposal has already been tested and works.

2. 50% discount on any Burger King burgers when paying with a Mastercard through the Android Pay app:

The rules of this offer state that in order to receive a discount, you must notify the cashier that you will be paying for the order via Android Pay. Apparently, providing a discount when paying via Android Pay is not automated and is carried out “by the hands” of the cashier. Keep this in mind if you want to eat burgers with a 50% discount.

3. Free cookies when paying for coffee at Starbucks using a MasterCard in the Android Pay app

4. 50% discount on travel to the MCC and metro from June 23 to July 23:

In general, initially this promotion was supposed to allow you to ride the subway for just 1 ruble, and not from June 23, but from the launch of Android Pay in Russia - May 23. But something went wrong, and the promotion was changed. We hope that this time everything will work out for sure, and from June 23 you can actually ride the metro for 20 rubles.

Raiffeisen Bank launched several promotions in honor of the launch of Android Pay.

5. Up to 25% cashback (but not more than 500 rubles) when paying with a Raiffeisen Bank Visa card using Android Pay in cafes and restaurants from May 23 to July 23, 2017:

6. Up to 30% cashback (but not more than 500 rubles) when paying with a Raiffeisen Bank MasterCard using Android Pay in supermarkets from May 23 to July 23, 2017:

It seems that these are all the known promotions launched in honor of Android Pay.

We will update this article if we hear of any new exciting offers. We will also notify you about updates to the article in our groups.
