Prize fund international. Multiple skill levels across four divisions

Group stage completed The International 2016, in which sixteen of the strongest teams in the world fought among themselves to reach the top of the main stage grid.

According to the competition regulations, the teams that took the first 4 places in each group received the right to continue their participation in the championship in the winners' bracket at the playoff stage. Consequently, the remaining 8 teams ended up in the losers’ bracket, where they will have to play the first round until one win and fight for their “survival” until the very end. The International 2016.

The tournament rules allowed the leaders of the group tables to choose their opponent for the first round of the playoff stage from among the teams that took 3-4 places in the opposite group: O.G. preferred to play with MVP.Phoenix, A EHOME agreed to fight with Alliance. Thus, E.G. the team got a couple Newbee, A Digital Chaos - Wings Gaming.

The teams were seeded in the lower bracket in the same way. TnC Gaming And Fnatic chose their opponents from the very bottom of the standings: the Filipinos (and DeMoN) will play in the first round with Vici Gaming Reborn, and Malaysians - with Escape Gaming. Therefore, the opponent Team Secret became a team LGD Gaming, and in pairs to Natus Vincere were appointed Team Liquid.

In the first map, the Chinese team again showed an original pick, choosing the hero Pudge, but lost. The second map with a more traditional pick ended in favor of Wings Gaming. In the remaining maps, the Chinese team no longer cast doubt on their superiority and confidently won the series with a score of 3:1.

In the playoffs of the tournament, Wings Gaming lost only two maps, both to the top five Digital Chaos. This success of WG was not the only one this season. Previously, the team managed to win at ESL One Manila 2016 and The Summit 5.

Earlier in the day, DC beat defending TI champions in the lower bracket finals - Evil Geniuses.

Digital Chaos' squad was formed just days before the transfer window closed in March this year. One of the last to join the team was the Ukrainian Roman “ Resolut1on» Fominok.

The tournament became one of the most unpredictable in history. last years. For the first time in the history of The International, two teams from the qualifiers played in the finals. Favorites from , having successfully taken first place in their group at the group stage, they could not win a single series in KeyArena. The only team representing the CIS region is Na`Vi G2A- took only 13-16th place.

Top 8 The International 2016:

  1. Wings- $9,121,908
  2. Digital Chaos- $3,420,716
  3. Evil Geniuses- $2,172,936

The group stage of The International 2016 tournament has come to an end. The teams, divided into two groups over three days, fought an exciting battle for the right to get into the upper bracket of the playoff round.

The teams that, after three days of competition, took the first four places in their groups, enter the upper bracket of the playoffs. The remaining teams are accordingly placed at the bottom. And if the former have the right to make mistakes, then for representatives of the “losers” group, defeat means termination of further participation in this tournament.

More detailed information about the format of matches at this stage, as well as their broadcast, will appear on our website.

Group stage results

Group A

Natus Vincere

Team Na"Vi, the only representative of the CIS, although she showed a good game on the third day of group matches, she was unable to break into the top half of the group. Having won the match with the Chinese team Wings Gaming, Na"Vi had to fight with OG DOTA2, the favorites of this tournament. The Ukrainian team tried to act unconventionally, but failed to beat the “greens”, losing both games.

Thus Born to win ended up in the lower bracket of the playoffs, where they will have to fight the team Team Liquid.

Other results

In Group A, quite predictably, the team won OG DOTA2, who has not lost a single match. Following him was the American team. Evil Geniuses, losing only to the Swedish team The Alliance. The last two places in the four winners were taken by The Alliance and the team representing China, Wings Gaming. Both teams have 8 points in their assets.
At the bottom of the Group A standings are TnC Gaming, which lacked a few points, Na"Vi and LGD Gaming. The team closes the table Escape Gaming, who has only two points to his name.

Group B

In Group B, teams competed for first place EHOME And Digital Chaos, the match between them ended in a draw. Thus, the team became the leader of the group EHOME with 12 points and a mark of 0 in the defeat column. DC, having one point less, were in second position, but, like the leader, did not lose a single match. The Chinese team confidently took third place Newbee, who received a direct invitation from Valve. But the fight for the last position was fought to the last and was decided only in the last round. It was taken by the MVP Phoenix team with 6 points, which beat three teams at once: Team Liquid, Team Secret and Fnatic, who had one point less. The last place in group B went to Vici Gaming Reborn, which is only one point behind the above three.

On the night of August 13-14, the last match of The International 6, still the most lucrative eSports tournament in the world, died down. Sixteen teams from all over the world competed for a total prize fund of twenty million dollars.

After a week of intense and incredibly beautiful battles in the playoffs, the winner was determined. According to good tradition, in even-numbered years the International Cup was won by a Chinese team: in 2012 - Invictus Gaming, in 2014 - NewBee. This year was no exception.

The main thing: this is a tournament in which dark horses ruled the roost

Turning and unpredictable moments happened more often at this The International than at any previous one. The first day of the playoffs began with surprises: the Koreans from MVP Phoenix, in a confident game, threw the tournament favorites OG into the lower bracket. Of course, much was expected from MVP; they gained strength with each new tournament and came to The International, perhaps in their best form. But to bring two-time major champions to their knees so easily and effortlessly?

Game 1 of the Playoffs: MVP Phoenix selects five melee heroes for his team. Koreans have their own Dota.

The best moments of the fourth and fifth days.

For fans from the CIS, the first day turned out to be sad. After an unsuccessful group stage, the Na’Vi team, which had almost completely renewed its roster, found itself in the lower bracket, where they were only one defeat away from being eliminated from the tournament. Unfortunately, Na’Vi was unable to oppose the European team Team Liquid and left the tournament, finishing 13-16.

The second day turned out to be the last for OG. The team, which, according to most analysts and bookmakers, should have taken first place, lost to the TnC team - dark horses from Southeast Asia, who qualified for The International through open qualifiers. This victory shocked not only the spectators, but also TnC itself: such unbridled joy had never been seen at the tournament.

A moment from the longest and certainly one of the most spectacular matches of the tournament - Evil Geniuses vs. EHOME.

From that moment on, The International 6 began the time for teams that few people bet on. The young Chinese team Wings Gaming had long shown promise of a good game, but it was wild to see how easily the team advanced through the upper bracket to the grand final, defeating MVP Phoenix and past champions of The International - Evil Geniuses along the way.

The losers' bracket (lower) was dominated by the Malaysian Fnatic and the American Digital Chaos, where Ukrainian player Roman "Resolut1on" Fominok played. And if Fnatic sometimes showed a decent game even before the tournament (although the results varied greatly from moment to moment), then Digital Chaos generally jumped two, three or four heads above expectations. They kicked the strongest Chinese teams LGD and EHOME out of the tournament, and then Fnatic themselves. In the finals of the lower bracket, Digital Chaos accomplished another feat and defeated the titan of the American Dota, Evil Geniuses, in a very tense game.

In the grand finals, Digital Chaos awaited Wings Gaming - but the young Chinese team turned out to be indomitable. Wings Gaming won with a score of 3:1, won more than nine million dollars and took the sixth Aegis.

Winners of The International 6.

Dota 2 is at its best this year

According to many professional players, the current patch is the best balanced in the entire history of the game. In years past, teams have tried to stick to one tactic that works, whether it's going late in the game and winning through well-fed carries, or playing aggressively and taking down opponents' towers early. This time, each team could afford to choose something different - there were much more effective strategies than at previous TIs. Some games lasted for an hour or more (such as EHOME vs. EG - 75 minutes), others ended in 18 minutes (NewBee vs. Team Liquid).

This year, Valve used augmented reality to represent the heroes. Sometimes these heroes also danced.

The same goes for heroes. The teams were not limited in their choice and during the group stage alone they used 100 heroes out of 111 available. From the pool of forgotten heroes, to the delight of the audience, Mirana and Shadow Demon returned - and became one of the most popular at the tournament. Moreover, Mirana changed her role from a support hero to the role of a “mid” and “carry”. All thanks to the latest addition, which gave her a new ability after purchasing Aghanim’s Scepter and made her a good attacking force.

Shadow Demon came as a surprise to many after being completely ignored for a long time. This time, the teams regularly took him in almost every game, because, firstly, he goes well with the same Mirana, and secondly, the balance patch slightly strengthened the hero, improving, among other things, his ability to create illusions of heroes. This is important because playing through illusions turned out to be one of the most popular tactics at this tournament.

What about the show?

This year The International 2016 pleased the audience not only with beautiful matches, but also with a high-quality show. The tournament was opened by violinist Lindsey Stirling, and in the last days of the playoffs they held an all-star match, where ordinary fans from the stands had the opportunity to play one match in a team with their favorite e-sportsmen.

But these are minor things. On the same day, Valve finally announced the release of a new hero - Underlord (aka Pit Lord according to old documents), which players have been waiting for for a year, or even more. Later, a new global update and event was announced, including another newcomer - the Monkey King, Monkey King (who said "Wukong"?). All this will happen in the fall.

Monkey King is the first new hero who was not in the original DotA All-Stars. I wonder what they will teach him?

What's next? The work of The International will be continued by two Major tournaments, and the space between them, as usual, will be filled by an endless series of smaller competitions. Well, in a year it will be time to take stock again in Seattle.

If there’s something other eSports can give to Dota is its ability to catch the media attention thanks to the International tournament that takes place every year. Now the time for the eSport tournament with the biggest prize pool is almost here. Once again this tournament will take place at the KeyArena Center in Seattle. The prize pool has already surpassed the $20,000,000 mark, which means that it has broken last year’s record with less than a week left for the big date. Additionally, this year’s competition promises to be even more interesting: for the first time, around 95% of the 111 heroes are viable in competitive matches thanks to the outstanding work Dota 2’s developers have done this last year. Still, more than about money, this year’s International will finally tell us if SEA truly is becoming one of the strongest regions. It will also allow Chinese teams to redeem themselves for their bad performance during the Shanghai Major. And finally, this TI6 will be interesting because it’s the first one to demand stable rosters. This is the event that Valve and Icefrog use to make decisions about the direction they want to give to Dota 2.

It certainly has it all to be considered not only the biggest Dota 2 championship, but also the most important eSport tournament. This is a wonderful end for the competitive season 2015/2016. The season 2016/2017 will feature just three Valve events: the, the and of course.

TI6 – Main Event

The Main Event will keep the same double-elimination format that has become tradition now. This means that there will be two brackets: Upper and Lower. The best 8 teams from the Group Stage will begin in the Upper Bracket, while the worst 8 will start from the Lower Bracket. Teams that lose in the Upper Bracket will simply drop to the Lower Bracket, whereas teams that lose in the Lower Bracket will be out of the tournament.

This year, the first round of the Lower Bracket will be a Best-of-One series. This means that we will see 4 teams drop out of the tournament on the 8th of August, which is the first day of the event. These Bo1 series are also hard to predict because a single mistake can drop the better team out of the competition.

For the rest of the Main Event, all games will be Best-of-Three with the exception in the Grand Finals, which is going to feature a Best-of-Five series.

Here we can see the importance of finishing in a good place during the Group Stage. The second chance teams get from starting in the Upper Bracket, and the additional rest day that the Upper Bracket finalist gets for the Grand Finals are important factors that can determine who’s going to win the International 2016.

Something that will change a little bet this year is the Group Stage round-robin format. Instead of Ti5’s 4 groups of 4, Valve has decided to turn it into 2 groups of 8, where the top 4 are going to the Upper Bracket, while the bottom 4 will go to the Lower Bracket. This make results much harder to predict, as the competition will be a lot fierce since each team will have to beat 7 counterparts in Best-of-Two matches.

As for scores:

  • A win (2-0) gives 3 points
  • A Draw (1-1) gives 1 point to both teams
  • A loss (0-2) gives 0 points

Tiebreakers will be played for teams finishing with the same amount of points for the 4th place

TI6 – Wild Card Tournament

The Wild Card tournament serves the purpose of giving another chance to teams that were really close to qualify during the Regional Qualifiers. This tournament will be played in Seattle on the 3rd of August, and it gives the head start to The International 2016.

This LAN tournament will be played with a double-elimination format, which is the same style that the Main Event will hold. Only that for Wild Cards, the top two teams will qualify to the Group Stage of the International 2016.

Let’s not forget that there’s a lot of potential in Wild Card teams; Ti5’s first Wild Card team –CDEC– managed to finish in 2nd place in the Main Event. Additionally, the second Wild Card team –MVP Phoenix– is now considered one of the best teams going to Ti6 with good chances of winning.

For this year, these are the teams that will be fighting for glory in this mini tournament in Seattle:

TI6 – Invited Teams

The 6 lucky teams that were invited to The International 2016 were chosen because of their recent performance. Now that Valve is only giving 6 invites, the invited teams had to show great performance in the last couple of months. For Valve, these are the best teams in the world right now:

Why are each of these teams considered the best?

There's not much to explain about O.G.; they won the first and . This is the only team in Dota 2 that has won two premium Valve tournaments. They deserved the first invitation even though they didn’t have a good performance during the , which happened between these two victories. They are now in great shape, and even won the ESL One Frankfurt 3-0 against Na’Vi, just after the Major. They are right now the scariest team. If they win Ti6, they will become the best team to have ever existed in Dota 2.

Team Liquid has become the most consistent team in the last four months. The last tournament they won was in May. They also finished second in the , and . This team has become the last boss of the toughest tournaments, and the main reason why they haven’t won more prizes lately probably has something to do with bad luck.

After the big Chinese roster crisis after the Shanghai Major, two teams have become incredibly scary: Newbee and LGD Gaming. The first one has gotten better results in the last months with a second place finish in against Liquid and third place in the Manila Major, also against Liquid. This team is formed by veterans that have won Tis, and it was carefully engineered to win The International 2016; they’re the favorites from China. The second team, LGD, had a tougher start than Newbee, but they’re now playing a lot better and are becoming as scary as they look on paper. It’s also a team made by TI winners and they have the talent to take the International 2016 Aegis to China.

MVP Phoenix were the underdogs just 4 months ago when they almost took the Winter Major. After that impressive showdown, they won both and . They were ought to have a better run in the Manila Major, and they entered as one of the favorites. Even though they finished 5-6 th place, they only lost to teams that were also invited to this Ti6. This makes them clearly one of the best teams at the moment.

Finally, the big surprise was Natus Vincere. It’s incredible how these guys have gotten really close to regaining the glory from their past years. They finished last in Ti5 and had a tough year until the last couple of months when they finished second place in the . They finished first in their group in the Manila Major, and lost only to the winner and the runner-up of the tournament. They deserve this invite because of their impressive improvement during the last weeks.

TI6 – Qualifiers

This International had two kinds of qualifiers:

The Open Qualifiers started from the 21st of June. There were two qualifiers per region (Asia, America and Europe). These teams played in a single-elimination bracket where all matches were Best-of-One up to and including the Quarter-Finals. Semi-Finals and Finals were Best-of-Three.

Winners:

The Regional Qualifiers ran from the 25th to the 29th of June. These qualifiers featured a new format never seen before in other International tournament:

Each region joined one round-robin group where the first place qualified to the tournament. The remaining second to fifth place played in a double-elimination playoff. The first place of these playoffs qualified to the International and the runner-up will go to the Wild Card LAN, which is expected to happen in Seattle before the event.

Additionally, two important teams weren’t given any invite because they broke Valve’s rules about roster lock. The current Aegis holders, Evil Geniuses had to play their way through the Open Qualifier to win one of the two open spots in the American Regional. The same applied for Shanghai Major winner, Team Secret, which had to play in the European Open Qualifier. This happened because both teams decided to swap offlane players between them just after the Manila Major, and they weren’t allowed to do this until Ti6 was over if they wanted an invitation of any kind. Fortunately, these teams managed to qualify to The International, which proves that they’re still tough opponents.

The qualifier contesters were:

Dota 2 – The International 2016 – Compendium:

This year’s International compendium is a little bit different than last year’s. Since now we have the Majors, Valve decided to combine the Spring Pass of the Manila Major with the International 2016 compendium. The Spring Pass was released the 16th of May for a price of $9.99 from which 25% will go to the International 2016 prize pool.

The compendium for the International 2016 is not accessible yet, but Valve will release it in an upcoming patch. It will become available for every Spring Pass owner.

Here you will find a complete article about this year’s Spring Pass/Compendium

TI6 – Prize Pool:

One of the main topics around every International is how large its prize pool is going to be. The International 2015 managed to reunite $18,429,613 after starting from $1,600,000. That’s a total of $16,829,613 added from Compendium and treasures sales. The objective this year is to exceed that amount.

To achieve this, 25% of the sales from the International Battle Pass, and also from all the treasures related to this event and levels bought by players will go to the final prize pool.

This year’s prize started with $1,600,000 but is already above $18,600,000. There’s less than a week left for The International, and now only Valve’s marketing skills will determine if we can make it to 20 millions.
