The best music album covers of the 21st century according to NME. The best music album covers of the 21st century according to NME Rock band record covers

One of the oldest and most respected music magazines in the world, the British New Musical Express (NME) has compiled a list of the best music album covers of the 21st century. The music itself and the personality of the musician did not play any significance in the choice - only the aesthetic component of the cover, only the artistic value. The result is a top of 22 albums, in which Kendrick Lamar and Bjork, Kanye West and David Bowie coexist in the most bizarre way.

1
Foals. Album Holy Fire

2
Kendrick Lamar. Album To Pimp a Butterfly

3
The Streets. Album Original Pirate Material

4
Tame Impala. Album Currents

5
Run the Jewels. Album Run the Jewels 2

6
The Strokes. Album Is This It

7
Kanye West. Album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Author - photographer George Condo. Initially, the photo of Kanye West in the center of the cover was indeed erotic, but the censors did not let it through. Then George began to “blur” the picture, providing the commission with an increasingly censored version. So this cover makes clear the point at which a “pornographic” photo becomes one that can be displayed on a Walmart shelf without question.

8
David Bowie. Album The Next Day

9
Frank Ocean. Album Blonde

Author - photographer Wolfgang Tillmans. Initially, Frank Ocean's photo was intended for Fantastic Man magazine, but Ocean himself forbade its use and suggested using it as the basis for the cover of the new album.

10
Radiohead. Album Hail to the Thief

The artist is Stanley Donwood, a designer who has worked on Radiohead covers since The Bends. In order to get a feel for the band's music, Stanley was always present during the recording of the album before creating the cover for it.

11
Young Thug. Album Jeffery

12
Blur. Album The Magic Whip

13
Interpol. Album Turn on the Bright Lights

14
Grimes. Album Visions

15
Lorde. Album Melodrama

16
Gorillaz. Album Demon Days

17
Kurt Vile. Album Wakin on a Pretty Daze

Author - Steve Powers, street artist. For local graffiti artists, this place has become something of a cult, and the number of drawings on the walls in the area has increased tenfold. Then one of the local residents erased Powers’ drawing because he believed that he was attracting vandals, which he later regretted and even apologized for.

18
St. Vincent. Album St. Vincent

19
Bjork. Album Volta

20
Father John Misty. Album Pure Comedy

The author is Edward Steed, who previously became famous as a cartoonist for The New Yorker. Ironically, for the album entitled Pure Comedy, he created his most emphatically non-humorous and apocalyptic work.

21
M.I.A. Album Kala

The author is another example of how a musician decides to create his album cover without outside help. Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A., did it all on her own, and the fact that she's on this list means she's got it right.

22
Stormzy. Album Gang Signs & Prayer

For those who don't agree with the resulting list or just want to dip their toes into something more conventional yet avant-garde, there's the work of Storm Thorgerson, the man responsible for classic covers by Pink Floyd, Offspring, Black Sabbath, Styx, Shpongle, Muse and Pendulum.

20 years before The Clash used the same color combination, Elvis Presley knew how compelling a green and pink font could be. The photo for the star's debut album was taken on July 31, 1955 during a concert in Tampa, Florida. The image of a young artist ready to take on the world is instantly arresting, embodying the raw power of raw rock 'n' roll. And it prepares an unsuspecting America of the mid-50s for a youth cultural revolution even before the pickup stylus touched the vinyl. Two decades later, British punks The Clash used the same font for the cover of their landmark album London Calling.

On the recording of The Beatles' craziest album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, costing £50,000, almost six months of work and 700 studio hours. For the cover, the musicians, dressed in bright uniforms, were photographed on March 30, 1967, against the backdrop of cardboard cutouts of those celebrities whom they considered important to themselves. The cover of Sergeant Pepper features Carl Gustav Jung, Edgar Poe, Bob Dylan, Oscar Wilde, Albert Einstein, Lewis Carroll, Aleister Crowley and others. For the first time in the history of recording, the album's lyrics were included on the back of the sleeve. The designer who created this miracle received a high honor: in June 2002, 70-year-old Peter Blake was knighted by Her Majesty.

The debut album of the gloomy American anti-hippies The Velvet Underground did not achieve commercial success, which did not prevent it from taking an honorable place among the most important records in the history of rock. According to legend, every owner of the treasured vinyl, who heard this strange, dark and viscous music in 1969, founded his own group. The album cover features a huge yellow banana with the caption: “Peel the skin slowly and look.” This is the work of the famous pop art master Andy Warhol, who was the manager and producer of The Velvet Underground. On early pressings of the record, a banana sticker was placed on the sleeve, revealing an image of a peeled banana printed on the sleeve itself.

Where do all Beatlemaniacs go when they come to London? Of course, to Abbey Road, the same one where the studio of the same name is located and which The Beatles cross on the cover of their last album, also named Abbey Road. The iconic photo shoot took place on a hot day on August 8, 1969. The photographer had ten minutes to take a photo: a section of the busy street was blocked by police specifically for the sake of the musicians. To this day, passers-by love to walk single file along the famous zebra crossing, unnerving London drivers. There are simply countless parodies of the famous cover. The most famous was done by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who walked across the road naked with their socks on.

Andy Warhol again! At a New York party in 1969, the pop art guru casually hinted to The Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger that it would be great to put a real jeans zipper on the cover of the next record. A year later, the crazy idea was realized in the design of the Sticky Fingers album. The entire envelope was taken up by a photograph of a man's fly tightly fitting to the hips - with a real zipper that could be unzipped. Of course, with such a radical design, problems arose: during transportation, the zipper was pressed into the album, scratching the vinyl and records lying in the stack. In addition to the scandalous fly, the album sleeve for the first time featured the band’s new logo – a cheekily protruding scarlet tongue.

Suite about birth, madness and time The Dark Side Of The Moon (“Dark Side of the Moon”) performed by British rock wizards Pink Floyd has long become a classic. The CD cover has forever entered the canon of modern design. The visionaries of the Hipgnosis studio placed a prism on it that refracts the light beam (and to simplify the design, the indigo color was deliberately removed from the spectrum). On the back there is a picture of a prism that produces spectrum convergence (this does not happen in nature, but what can you do for greater effect!) In addition to the luxurious sleeve, two posters were included with the record. One featured concert photographs of the band, the other featured photos of the pyramids in Giza, taken under full moon. Pink Floyd insisted that the inclusion of posters in the artwork would not increase the price of the record.

Bob Marley's 1973 album Catch A Fire turned him and his band The Wailers into international stars. The album sleeve matched the title: the entire space of the cover was occupied by an image of a Zippo lighter. But that's not all. The top of the cardboard lighter folded back, like a real cigarette lighter, revealing the record itself. Of course, the production of such a cover was not cheap, because the two elements of the “lighter” had to be connected manually. Therefore, it was not possible to arrange the entire circulation of the record in this way. Only the first 20 thousand copies were released in the “lighter” cover. Further prints were packaged in a regular envelope with a large portrait of Bob Marley smoking a huge joint.

Pink Floyd's tenth album is called Animals, that is, “Animals.” The idea for the album's artwork was created by bass guitarist Roger Waters. He drove past London's Battersea Power Station every day and suggested that it be used on the cover. However, the building was not enough. The album was called “Animals,” so it was necessary to include some kind of animal in the envelope. An inflatable pig 10 meters high was ordered. She was inflated with helium and launched into the sky above the station. Not the first time, but the necessary photo was taken. In one take, a pig flew into Kent and scared away one farmer's cows. The enraged farmer did not know that he was participating in the creation of one of the most outstanding record covers in history!

Is there anything more punk than putting male genitalia on an album cover? Nirvana did just that, although they modeled it on a child swimming in a pool. The controversial Nevermind album cover may be perceived as an allegory for the pursuit of the almighty dollar, but in fact (according to Geffen Records art director Robert Fisher) it is only the result of Kurt Cobain's passion documentary film about underwater birth. Every five years or so, that same boy (in 1991, four-month-old Spencer Elden) recreates the cover for posterity, and Nevermind's cover design has inspired countless parodies and tributes, including Homer Simpson.

For the cover of their seventh album, Britpop heroes Blur enlisted the (at the time) mysterious street art artist Banksy, whose witty stencil works cover walls around the world from his hometown of Bristol to Palestine and Los Angeles. For the Think Tank project, Banksy created a series of graffiti on the walls and doors of London that are slightly different from what audiences usually expect from him. These works do not contain provocative messages, and their heroes are children and romantic couples. True, they all wear bulky diving helmets on their heads. True to his principles, Banksy did not take money for the work, but in 2007 the original cover was sold at auction for 75 thousand pounds.

Ever since Elvis Presley moved his hips, rock 'n' roll has always had a bad reputation. Provocative music album covers became another battlefield for moralists and had a huge impact on sales.

TheBeatles: Yesterday And Today (1966)

This compilation for the American market was one of the first cases of outrageous covers. The photograph of musicians surrounded by dolls and pieces of meat seemed to be a parody of pop art. However, many retailers did not appreciate the humor and about 50 thousand copies were returned. The publishers quickly changed the design to a calmer one, and the record topped the Billboard charts.

TheJimi HendrixExperience: Electric Ladyland (1968)

The original British edition of the legendary Jimi Hendrix featured a whopping 19 naked women on the cover. Subsequently, it was changed when Hendrix personally expressed dissatisfaction with the nudity and replaced it with his beloved.

John Lennon& Yoko Ono: Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins (1968)

The images for John and Yoko's avant-garde album were shot by the couple themselves using a time-lapse camera. Predictably, the visual result of this work caused outrage, prompting distributors to sell the record in a special brown wrapper. Only 5,000 copies were produced in the UK in, so to speak, original form.

The Rolling Stones: Beggars Banquet (1968)

The original "banned" cover of The Rolling Stones' classic album featured a run-down toilet and graffiti. The label rejected this option and initially released the record with a white cover designed like an invitation card.

David Bowie: Diamond Dogs (1974)

If you expand the cover of the eighth studio album David Bowie, then you could see a star with dog piers. In fact, the artist’s original message implied something from George Orwell and a post-apocalyptic society, but the fatal genitalia had to be glossed over until 1990, when EMI / Rykodisc released a CD.

The musicians were lucky that this man created the covers for their albums. They're gorgeous. The name Storm Thorgerson is known to every music lover. How did it happen that without the works of this photographer, designer and artist it is impossible to imagine the musical culture of the second half of the 20th century? It’s just that he actually reinvented how records could be designed in general. His studio Hipgnosis created covers for the most famous rock bands: Led Zeppelin, Cranberries, 10cc, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Muse. But Storm became famous for his covers for the legendary Pink Floyd, with whose members he had been friends since childhood. Torgerson allowed himself to go against the rules and fashion, and was not afraid to enter into disputes with industry giants. His fearlessness, combined with real talent, gave the world brilliant images that have become part of culture forever. Storm Thorgerson would have turned 70 on February 28th. We chose best works this brilliant man, which can be considered endlessly. Pink Floyd, album “Tree Of Half Life”, 1997 “I like to play tricks with reality, to distort reality. Some of my works are puzzling with the question - is it real or not?

Pink Floyd, album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”, 1987. Storm Thorgerson created his whimsical photo collages using glue and scissors long before the advent of Photoshop. He did not change his method even after computer graphics came to serve cover designers. The world of music covers is quirky and intricate. You can collect a whole hundred interesting and significant things. But when writing this material, I decided to be guided solely by my own opinion. Yes, it's subjective, but it's honest. I selected only those covers that impressed me at the time.

To be honest, I hesitated for several minutes when choosing the title photo. There were fluctuations between "The Beatles" And "Pink Floyd" Moreover, each of these groups has several albums with excellent artwork. I decided to limit myself and choose only one cover from one artist. In the end I decided that “Animals» y «Pink Floyd" deserves to be put first. A huge inflatable pig against the backdrop of a gloomy building is powerful. By the way, the pig was later used at concerts and flew away several times. And the power plant building eventually became a landmark of sorts. The album was released in 1977.

In general, everything is clear about the title photo, but the cover below is “The Beatles» « Sgt. Pepper ͗ s Lonely Hearts Club Band" Record from 1967.

WITH "King Crimson“I have a strange relationship. I've known the name of this group for a long time, but I only got around to listening to them a couple of days ago! I liked it, although it was difficult in places. I also remembered a joke from a friend that it’s not really metal that’s hard to listen to, but music like this. I completely agree. The cover is from the debut album “In the Court of the Crimson King" 1969

That's interesting. If according to the covers "The Beatles" or "Pink Floyd"I have a good sense of direction, then"The Rolling Stones“Somehow passed me by. I listened to several albums from them for informational purposes, but the whole thing didn’t sit well with me. And yet, the cover of this record is firmly etched in my memory. Album "Tattoo You"continues the list of records whose designs I really like. Year 1981.

« Grateful Dead» specific group. I have never met anyone who really loved the work of these guys. And I'm not a fan myself either. But one cover stuck in my memory. This is the cover of the album "Aoxomoxoa" Another interesting point is that on the back of the design you can find a little girl named Courtney Harrison. She is only 5 years old there. Later, the world will recognize this girl as Courtney Love. The album was released in 1969.

« Queen"famous team, even without listening to them it is purposefully difficult to avoid learning about their hits. I've never been a fan of this band, but the cover of their second disc "Queen II“For some reason I remember it. Perhaps because it's an image I've seen on T-shirts a lot. A record with this cover was released in 1974.

David Bowie is an interesting person. And he has plenty of interesting covers. I decided to opt for the 1974 album “Diamond Dogs" The design of this album was an embarrassment. Due to the fact that David was depicted as a human dog with visible genitals, they did not want to distribute the album. As a result, the back of the record was retouched. And the original cover can now cost more than a thousand dollars.

"The Mamas and the Papas"And their album 1966 of the year"If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears"initially had beautiful cover. In my opinion of course. Some citizens were confused by the toilet. As a result, the album was released without him.

Elton John is, of course, a dubious rock musician for many, but my conscience does not allow me not to mention the brilliant design of his 1975 album. "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy"Fantastically done. Anyone who has held this record in their hands will understand what I'm talking about. And he will definitely appreciate it. You can look at the spread there for a long time, although it is not a double album.

On June 3, 1970, the album “Deep Purple in Rock" Since I do not write about the contents of the albums, but only look at the covers, we will omit the details of what impact he had on the world of music. But the cover is beautiful too. The group has other interesting albums, but I decided to focus on this one. In my humble opinion, it is one of the most recognizable in terms of design, not only for a single group, but in the history of music in general.

U "Led Zeppelin» rich story. Including in terms of covers. Honestly, I was torn between three options. It was the same with "The Beatles" and with "Pink Floyd" There were people who knew how to approach album design competently. Yes, and the same "The Rolling Stones"In addition to the above album, there were several other notable designs. But since I have driven myself into a framework, I will remain in it.

The group's debut and self-titled album was released in 1969. The design uses a real photograph of the crash of the Hindenburg airship.

I love the groupThe Doors" But here's what's interesting. Absolutely all album covers feature the band’s musicians, with the exception of the 1967 album “Strange Days».

Jim later spoke about the design as follows: “At least it’s better than our nasty faces.” Why the faces appeared on the other covers is a mystery. The photograph, by the way, is not a collage, but a staged shot of a circus performance. True, half of the people in the frame have nothing to do with the circus.

In my opinion, "Black Sabbath"The best artwork was on the album"Heaven and Hell» 1980. By the way, this is the first album recorded after the departure of Ozzy Osbourne. Smoking angels are great. This picture very humanizes these creatures.

Well. Let's go through my favorite punks. Well, or it would be more correct to say to their predecessors. "The Stooges"with the album "Fun House“They were clearly ahead of their time. In 1970, few people needed such music. But it's not about the music, it's about the design. In my opinion it is very successful. Iggy is captured in such a clear way. Either he is floating somewhere, or he is destroying something.

Together with Iggy during the same period of time there was another great band that played something between rock and roll and what would later become punk rock. The debut album of the group “MC5” entitled “Kick Out The Jams"was published in 1969. Naturally, it did not become commercially successful. But its cover is interesting. Some kind of crazy kaleidoscope of faces. The release of the album was associated with a scandal due to obscene language, but today, of course, all this is perceived as funny. Over the past almost half a century, the world of music has changed a lot.

In my opinion, one of the simplest and at the same time memorable covers was by Andy Warhol's protégé. Debut record under the sign "The Velvet Underground and Nico", published in 1967, is outwardly recognizable and catchy. It is interesting that in the first editions a banana was glued to the envelope, and under it one could find another banana, but already peeled and pink.

« Ramones"are considered one of the main punk rock bands. But I never liked them. For some reason they didn't come in. But the album cover "Rocket to Russia"1977 I consider worthy of attention. A simple shot, but very recognizable.

Here's my favorite punk cover. Just And known. "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols."1977 Today it is already a classic. Just as the fashion of safety pins, tousled hair, ripped jeans and Union Jacks has become a classic. All this was before "Sex Pistols“, but it was they who popularized this whole charitable work.

Joy Division with the album "Unknown Pleasures"1979, one of my main shocks at the time. True, I didn’t hold the record in my hands. I had an audio cassette copied from a record. I wonder if she really looked like that? The famous drawing, and it is really famous - people even make tattoos like this to this day, is an illustration from an astronomical encyclopedia. This is a plot of hundreds of radio pulses from the first discovered pulsar. Before its discovery, it was believed that these impulses could come from intelligent beings. It turned out not. Space is much more cunning than people.

In general, a very symbolic cover. Interestingly, this is the only album that was released during Ian Curtis's lifetime. In 1980, he hanged himself, and the second album was released after his death. Well, then they released a bunch of other collections.

The group "Dead Kennedys“I only like the first album. By and large, they didn’t need to release anything else. But the restless Jello Biafra cut a bunch of other albums, collections and who knows what. I like the cover of the collection published in 1987. And this whole thing is called “Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death" At the same time, it’s not just a collection of some of the best things. It's more of a compilation of previously unreleased tracks. Connoisseurs generally know. Well, what interests us here is the cover.

« The Exploited"great group. I am not kidding. Of course, listening to them for a long time is boring, but if you look at old videos, you can see what serious energy comes out of these guys. As for me, this is one of the most important punk rock bands. Again, it was they who brought into fashion the Iroquois and all sorts of skulls with them. They have a lot of good covers that are iconic to me. But I decided to opt for the design of the 1983 album “Let'ss Start a War" Perhaps he laid the foundation for all these skeletons and Iroquois. This is undoubtedly a milestone for punk culture.

It's a stone's throw from punk rock to much heavier music. Although it is debatable which is harder. But it's not about music. We're talking about the 1986 cover of the group "Metallica». « Master of Puppets“in itself is a milestone in the history of music and naturally its design also occupies a worthy place there.

« U2 as a band never really appealed to me, but they sure do have one noteworthy cover. Perhaps for many, the artwork for the 1991 album "Achtung Baby"may seem boring, but personally I like it. I assume that the issue is the similarity of the design of the album of our group “Nautilus Pompilius” and their album “At Random”.

« Depeche Mode" and the album "Violator", released in 1990, has a strict design. The cover was designed by Anton Corbijn. He also partially designed the previous disc “U2".

Album of the group "Nirvana» « Nevermind"hit the shelves in 1991 and changed the world of music forever. In my opinion, this is generally one of the most famous covers in the world of music.

The boy who was on the cover today is an artist. And his name is Spencer Elden. By the way, this is not the only cover with his image. Already in the 2000s, a solo album of one of the participants was released with him.Skinny Puppy».

Album's cover "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"1995 may not be the catchiest in the history of rock music, but for me personally it is definitely important. This good album. And a wonderful picture was used in the design. Album of the group "The Smashing Pumpkins» double. This is rare today.

The band's self-titled debut release "Rage Against The Machine"was published in 1992. The design uses a real photograph of the self-immolation of a Buddhist monk. The photograph, of course, was known in itself long before the album was released. But still, in my opinion, this design deserves attention.

Marilyn Manson is a famous provocateur. Although in general, if you listen to his albums and ignore the lyrics, he doesn’t play anything that stunning. Well, that is, how? I like his first albums. They are interesting. But if Manson had not had a penchant for outrageousness, it is not a fact that he would have become famous at all. I really love his videos. There are a lot of masterpieces there. But with the design of the covers, in my opinion, things are so-so with him. The only exception is the album "Mechanical Animals" released in 1998. By the way, only Manson's face is on the cover. During editing, the breasts were taken from one woman, and the hips from another. For real breasts, go to Pea Orange.

The group "KoIn"I really like the 1998 album"Follow the Leader" Not only in content, but also in design. Perhaps because this animation is also in the team’s videos.

Having almost written the material, I remembered another interesting cover. For me, the artwork for Bruce Springsteen's 1984 album is one of the personifications of the USA. "Born in the U. S. A." in my opinion, it is very recognisably made.

By the way, I read with surprise that even this cover was associated with a scandal. Some people thought Bruce was urinating on the American flag. But in the end, this matter seemed to be hushed up, and it was with this design that the record was released.

I’ll end the selection with the cover of the group “Lynyrd Skynyrd" Album "Street Survivors"was released in 1977. At first glance, there is nothing special about this cover. But three days after the album's release, the band went on tour and crashed in a plane crash. In addition to the two pilots, the group's road manager and three members of the team also died. The album was immediately re-released, but with a different design. Without any flames. For some reason this story really impressed me.

Now, actually, a short afterword about the covers and moral foundations that were not included. U "Led Zeppelin"I originally wanted to choose the cover from "Houses of the Holy" But it shows naked children. After hesitating, I decided that someone might see pedophilia or child pornography here. For the same reason, the selection does not include the album “Virgin Killer» groups «Scorpions" I was actually very surprised that these guys did such a cover in 1976.

U "The Jimi Hendrix Experience"It was an interesting idea with the cover"Electric Ladyland" Naked beautiful women. 19 pieces. But naturally, this design did not pass censorship.

“The design was good”The Black Crowes" on the album "Amorica" But I decided to refrain from publishing.

In principle, you can safely make a separate selection based on nudity. The cover is beautifully donePixies" on "Surfer Rosa" Yes and the sameRoxy Musicdid not disdain this approach.

Well, I’ll also mention separately the group “Pantera"with the album "Far Beyond Driven" Those who need it know without me what is depicted there. And, of course, I’ll remember the bootleg “Dawn of the Black Hearts» commands «Mayhem" It's a gloomy cover.

In principle, other heavy groups also used corpses, dismembered bodies, gore and other beauties in their decoration, but this will not get through to me. I worked as an orderly for a while and saw a lot. In the case of "Mayhem“It’s interesting that the design uses a photograph of the corpse of the band’s vocalist after suicide. He used a shotgun for this activity. You understand that I will not insert such a photograph here for ethical reasons.

I was surprised by the lack of exciting covers from such groups as “Rammstein» « NIN" And "Tool" These guys have a lot of good videos, but none of the covers stuck with me. Which is strange.

Well, that's all. Thank you for attention. I hope it was interesting. And of course it’s interesting to know your opinion about the covers of foreign groups. Just a request! There’s no need to insert any corpses from the covers into my comments. I already wrote that I won’t be impressed by this, but I’ll repeat it again just in case. There is also no need to show explicit pornography. More interested in something beautiful and unusual. Even if it’s pop. That's all for sure.
