Just 15 years ago you didn’t have to choose what to make your garage out of. Whatever material we managed to get will go on the walls. Nowadays, various technologies have emerged that make construction an inexpensive and relatively simple task. One such way to build a garage is to use frame technology.

A frame garage is lightweight, simple, and does not require large expenses. With proper skill, it can be done in a week (such cases are described on the Internet). The main thing is to choose a convenient place: the site should be open so that it is possible to approach it from all sides.

Let's list the advantages of the building:

  • low price (when compared with brick);
  • lightness of parts (two people can assemble a garage);
  • speed of assembly;
  • structural strength.

There is also an obvious disadvantage - the wood needs to be insulated and waterproofed, to make a so-called “pie”. Before that, find out its structure, compare different options and choose the best one, so as not to waste materials in vain.

The disadvantage is the flammability of the frame material. Therefore, the wooden frame is impregnated with an antiseptic. It is advisable to sheathe it outside and inside with building materials that do not burn. When choosing insulation, choose non-flammable stone wool.

Stages of construction of a frame garage

The frame requires little effort, there is no need for a large team. You and an assistant are enough. The tools you will need will not be that many: at least shovels, hammers, a level. Garbage needs bags. It is better to work with gloves.

For the foundation you will need formwork, you can take a ready-made one from someone, or you can make it yourself from boards and self-tapping screws.

The building material will be wood: you will need “one hundred” and “fifty” beams. However, you can also choose a metal profile pipe for the frame. The foundation requires a concrete solution.

Let us list the stages of creating a frame:

  1. Clearing space for a garage, creating a gravel bed.
  2. Installation of the foundation - a monolithic slab.
  3. Installation of the frame.
  4. Making a roof.
  5. Hanging the gate.

The preliminary stage will be to create a drawing and determine all the dimensions of the future building. Options for drawings are at the end of the article.

Frame garage foundation

Due to the fact that not only the walls, but also the weight of two cars will put pressure on the foundation, it is better to pour a good monolithic slab as it. You will need:

  • formwork;
  • reinforcement mesh for the foundation;
  • cement;
  • dry construction sand and water;
  • gravel.

Before pouring, you need to dig a trench and place the formwork in it. And inside the future slab there is a mesh of reinforcement for the foundation. Concrete is mixed according to the data in the table below.

The following work should only be done after the slab has completely dried. If it is very hot outside, the slab should be watered after pouring.

Frame installation

While the concrete is drying, you need to choose what kind of garage frame you will make. There are at least two options:

The first option is considered more environmentally friendly, but also more expensive. Profile pipe is cheaper, but not as pleasant to work with as wood. In general, the choice is up to the owner of the building.

If you choose wood, treat it with an antiseptic before installation. The lower trim is assembled from 100 by 50 timber, connections are made in each corner using a notch and dowels. Corner posts and posts for strengthening gates should be made from honeycomb. Intermediate posts are installed on the lower beam, which are secured using dowels. The distance between the strapping posts is 1200-1500 mm. At the corners you also need struts, which will give strength to the frame. The frame is completed by the top trim.

If the frame is made of a profile pipe, then you cannot do without welding. Also, the lower trim is made from a smaller cross-section of 40 by 20 pipe, the corners and gate posts are made from 40 by 40 pipe. Usually, the work on constructing the frame does not exceed three to four days.

Roof for a frame garage for two cars

The roofing must be installed in accordance with all the rules so that the roof can withstand the snow load. For a two-car garage, it is better to build a gable-type frame with identical slopes.

First, a rafter system is made with an even step, for which boards 100 by 50 and 100 by 25 are taken, as well as connecting elements. If the roof is very wide, then it is necessary to install more expansion beams so that the load is even. The ridge fixes the roof.

  • slate;
  • corrugated sheeting;
  • metal tiles;
  • bitumen sheet.

A drain is installed on the overhang. The entrance opening has a gate of the required size. For frame construction, it is better to choose roller shutters rather than swing doors. They are much lighter, fit well into the design of the building and will not warp with slight subsidence of the structure if the location for the garage was not chosen very well.

The process of making a frame for a garage for two cars can be seen in this video. Just keep in mind that in the recording, a frame garage is being built without installing a foundation (temporary assembly).

Garage finishing and insulation

  • eurolining;
  • siding;
  • professional sheet, etc.

For insulation, you can use any material offered on the construction market. But it is advisable to give preference to non-flammable mineral wool.

When constructing a “pie” of garage walls, you can use many of the options found on the Internet. After all, this non-residential premises. But there are two basic rules that will save you a lot of time when comparing all designs.

  1. The vapor barrier is installed indoors (on the warm side).
  2. Wind protection and waterproofing - outside. It will save the garage frame during bad weather.

The rules apply to both the structure of the walls and the roof of the building. In general, garage insulation layers usually look like this (from the outside):

  • external finishing;
  • wind protection;
  • OSB type board;
  • insulation;
  • vapor barrier;
  • layer for interior decoration, for example, plasterboard.

This option is shown in the photo. There may be other assembly methods. For example, a “pie” without OSB, which is needed to prevent the insulation from becoming damp. Or without wind protection.

Two car garage designs

A garage for two cars is usually built on its own site, so it would be useful to place a terrace, workshop or other technical room in this building. We offer several garage projects that are made of wooden panels on a frame.

The first project is a room with a garage for two cars with a small workshop of 17.5 m2, which can be used for carpentry or plumbing, or for storing important tools. According to the plan, there is no window in the workshop; if one is needed, it should be added to the drawing. To the right of the entrance to the garage it is proposed to build a narrow terrace with dimensions of 1.7 by 7 meters.

The second project is a garage for two cars, behind the partition of which there are two more utility rooms for storing tools, replacement wheels, and oil containers. If you don't need these rooms, you can remove them from the plan and get a drawing of a two-car garage without additional zones.

The final question that worries car owners - future builders of a frame garage. This is the price. The repair portals have calculated the minimum cost of the structure for 2017. The frame of the garage will cost at least 35 thousand rubles. For double roller shutters with an electric lift - at least 100 thousand. Another few tens of thousands will go towards the “pie” of the walls: siding, insulation, drywall, wind protection.

Builders on the Internet expect that building a frame garage for two cars (especially using a wood frame) costs more than building a structure of similar size, but made of foam concrete. Since foam concrete does not need to be additionally insulated, sheathed or waterproofed.

But with a frame garage you can save on labor costs; you don’t need a team to build it. One manager (you) and one auxiliary worker (your friend) are enough.

The car has ceased to be an element of luxury. Most often it is perceived as a necessity; without it, life for many will simply change or stop. Many families now have two cars at their disposal. And this is very convenient - someone goes to work, and in the second car another family member goes about his business. Or two cars are diverse - the first car is a small hatchback for trips around the city, and the second is an SUV for frequent trips out of town.

In such a situation, the question arises - to build two garages or one, but common for cars. Naturally, most often one common garage is built, because it is much more convenient.

And also during construction it is necessary to take into account many different factors.

Standard size

Before building a two-car garage, you need to consider more than just the size of the cars you currently own. You always need to keep in mind the fact that your future car will be taller, longer or wider than your current one.

If you plan to own your cars again for a long time, then you can safely start calculations. There are standard indicators for calculation - the size of one parking space is taken as a basis:

  • width – more than 2.4 m;
  • length – from 5.5 m;
  • height - depends entirely on your car.

It is necessary to include in the calculations the free space between the car and the wall, as well as between the cars themselves. Usually this is half a meter. It is also necessary to calculate the height - usually it is customary to add 50 cm to the height of the tallest family member or the tallest car. Therefore, after carrying out all the calculations, you can get the minimum dimensions of a garage for two cars based on standard parameters:

  • width = 50+240+50+240+50 = 630 cm;
  • length = 550 cm;
  • height = 220 cm.

These calculations do not take into account the make and layout of the car interior, nor the presence of additional shelves and cabinets for tools. Therefore, this calculation system is used extremely rarely.

Other methods of calculating sizes are more often used.

Individual parameters

Width selection

This dimension is one of the most important when drawing up a plan for building a future garage. Everything depends on the choice of width - and the quantity building materials that will be necessary in the process, and the functionality of the future structure.

Naturally, the width of the garage should not be equal to the sum of the widths of two cars. When calculating the width, it is necessary to take into account: the width of the cars, the distance between the cars and the gap from the car to the wall. However, the garage is often used as a storage room for strollers, sleds, and bicycles. There may be a large number of racks for tools, spare parts and parts.

When calculating the distance between the wall and the car, many factors are taken into account. If you need to store your bike, you need to leave an extra meter of width. If the car is five-door, then there should be at least 50-60 cm to the wall, if the car is three-door, then 70-90 cm.

If there are shelves, racks or cabinets in the garage, you need to take into account their width, and also leave extra bed. It is necessary for free access to them and the car. On average, 40-70 cm is added to the width on the side where there will be a large number of shelves.

Length selection

Many owners of iron horses have cabinets and shelving in the back of the garage. In this case, you will have to increase not the width, but the length. The calculation of the length of the garage is influenced by factors such as:

  • car length;
  • it is necessary to leave 90-110 cm from the car to the gate - this will allow you to conveniently leave the garage;

  • if you have a workshop in the back of the garage, you must leave 2-2.5 meters on it, in addition to parking spaces;
  • if there is a back door to the yard or to a neighboring building, it is necessary to increase the length of the garage by 50-60 cm for convenient passage.

Height selection

Most often, the height of a passenger car does not exceed the height of a person - about 180 cm. Then calculations are made so that the driver can move comfortably indoors.

According to technical standards, the height of the garage should not be lower than 2 m. However, this indicator is almost never used anywhere, because it is simply inconvenient for a person over 180 cm tall to move around the garage. The ceiling height is calculated taking into account the height of the car:

  • add half a meter for the convenience of opening the rear door of the car;
  • the presence of lighting and other devices on the ceiling is taken into account;
  • the height is added if there is a sliding mechanism;
  • the need to create a reserve.

The average height of garages for passenger cars is 240-260 cm, for SUVs – 3 meters or more. When installing a lift in a new garage, the height of the garage increases to 4.5 - 5 m.

Basic drawings

When considering standard schemes, it is necessary to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

The option on the left is only good if you just need to park two small cars. This is also a good option if you don’t have a lot of space for a garage. But you can’t store anything in such a garage, and it’s extremely difficult to move around in it. The disadvantage is that it will be extremely problematic to place a larger car together with a second car.

The option on the right is an option for a more prepared garage for working in it. The width on each side allows you to install small shelving or easily open doors without fear of scratching them. The length of the garage is enough for a very long car (up to 5 m), or to accommodate a workshop.

The width allows you, when replacing a car with a larger one, not to worry or think about the fact that it will be extremely cramped.

Gates and their dimensions

When building a garage, it is necessary to take into account that not only the walls and roof will become the object of construction. You also need to remember about the gate as an integral part of the garage. There are two gate options.

The first option is a common large gate. Their width is 5 meters or more. However, the installation of such gates is usually associated with some problems - the need to increase the rigidity of the door leaf, large heat losses. To get into the garage you need to make a separate entrance - this is better than using these large gates.

If a gate or individual part breaks down common system It will be difficult to drive cars out of the garage - also a drawback of such a system.

The second option is more optimal - make a separate entrance for each car. The width of each entrance is calculated as the width of the car + 40-50 cm. And also if one gate breaks down, if necessary, both cars leave through the same gate.

But the cost of the work and the gate itself in this case will be higher than the price of a single gate.

Many experienced builders use additional tricks when building a garage and calculating its dimensions:

  • If children live in the house, then it is better to increase the width of the garage. Children can open car doors very sharply, and if they are close together, the doors, walls, and neighboring cars can be damaged. To avoid this, it is best to make a margin in width.
  • Lighting fixtures should not hang from the ceiling. Many people have a stereotype that lighting lamps should only be at the top. If necessary, all or part of the lighting can be placed on the walls.

  • Look into the future to see if there will be a need to buy a larger car. Even if such an opportunity does not arise in the near future, then remember - the garage is built to last for decades, so there must be a reserve for the main parameters.
  • The space for cabinets, shelves and racks must be planned. The ideal option would be if you calculate the space for them in advance and know exactly the parameters of the shelves and cabinets themselves. Even if you leave some stock for shelving, not every one of them will fit well into the space allotted to it.
  • When choosing the width of the gate, it is worth understanding what the entrance to the garage looks like. If the car will not enter straight, but at an angle, then the width of the gate must be increased or the design and location of the entrances must be changed.

Many car enthusiasts are interested in the question, what is the optimal size of a garage for 2 cars, what factors should be taken into account during planning, how do sizes affect materials? There is no clear or universal answer for all cases; there may be too many options. But there is general recommendations professionals who can help you choose a two-car garage option.

What to consider when planning

The more individual factors are taken into account at the design stage, the fewer problems will arise during the operation of the structure. Besides, proper planning will provide the opportunity to achieve significant savings Money, reducing the estimated cost and increasing the service life of the building. Standard dimensions for a two-car garage should take into account:

  1. Possibility of convenient entry/exit of the car from the garage. This indicator depends not only on the size and number of gates, but also on the location of the building on the site, the presence and characteristics of access roads.
  2. Use of the garage. Will it only house cars, or will it be necessary to provide premises for utility rooms, rest rooms, work areas, etc. Will there be an inspection pit in the garage, is it a separate building or an extension to the main one. What is the width and length of the building, ceiling height, roof material and type of rafter system, presence of attic rooms.
  3. Climatic zone of residence. The further north the region, the greater the height of the maximum snow cover. This means that the angle of inclination of the slopes should increase, the rafters should be designed from durable materials, taking into account snow and wind loads.
  4. Car brands. Cars can be cars and trucks, differ in height and width, door sizes, etc.

The premises must satisfy users in all respects. An important point is that during design, possible changes in the vehicle fleet should be taken into account. It is not advisable to renovate the premises after purchasing a new car; often such work requires not only a lot of time, but also large material investments. It is more economically profitable to immediately build a building with a reserve.

Where do the calculations begin?

The optimal dimensions begin to be calculated from the minimum required area, the parameters are tied to the dimensions of the cars. With the doors open, the distance to the walls should be at least 0.5 meters, from the hood to the wall at least one meter. This is provided that the garage will be used only for storing cars. The size of a garage for 2 cars should take into account the presence of a passage between them when the doors are open. This parameter is at least fifty centimeters; a minimum of 20–25 cm should be added to the distance for parking errors.

You should calculate the data yourself; it’s a good idea to consult with the owners of double garages and ask them about the operating conditions. The advice of experienced car owners is no worse than the advice of professional architects.

Dimensions of the most optimized garage

Types of garages Buildings may have several fundamental architectural differences; they should be taken into account during calculations.

Garage for a car and a van or mini-truck

In this option, the ceiling height is under the timber and passenger car are calculated separately. The garage is very functional, allowing you to store cars of various classes. The estimated cost is much lower than two hotel buildings for the same needs.

Garage with canopy

Allows you to reduce the number of opening/closing gates; cars can remain under an ordinary canopy for a large amount of time. Garage doors are the weakest and most expensive architectural component. In addition, it is the one that most often fails and requires periodic maintenance and repairs. The width of a garage with a canopy should be calculated using the same algorithm as the options described above. The canopy must provide protection for the entire length of the car; the width is tied to the parameters of the garage. If desired, the side surfaces of the structure can be sheathed, due to this the capacity of the garage is doubled without large financial losses.

Garage with technical rooms

Good option with prospect of implementation repair work by cars. This is the optimal size of a garage for 2 passenger cars, the width is almost 10 meters, the length without technical rooms is 6 meters, the total length is 8.4 meters. The boxes are separate, which allows you to make one room heated and the other cold. This layout is considered optimal in winter period time, it is possible to save expensive energy resources. Additional amenities are available due to the presence of a separate entrance to all operated premises.

Dimensions of a garage for two cars with a common technical room

A budget option for an optimal garage for two cars with one technical room. The overall width of the garage increases slightly by reducing the length. The garage does not have a partition, which allows, if necessary, to store cars of various brands. True, in this case it will be necessary to change the transport layout plan, taking into account the exit direction of the driver and passengers.
Types of optimal garages depending on the gate design The greater the width of the building, the stronger the swing gates should be. Due to this dependence, it is strictly not recommended to make one swing gate for two entrances. The best option is roller gates.

Separate roller gates
General garage roller doors

Rolling gates allow you to automate the opening/closing process. Modern systems have fairly reliable protection against the penetration of unwanted persons. In addition, they do not require free space on the sides of the garage. As for swing gates, this option is currently considered the exception rather than the rule. Swing gates have quite a few disadvantages: they have Negative influence on the strength of load-bearing structures, they cannot be automated. Another significant drawback is the large kinetic energy may cause destruction of loaded garage components.
Roof features Most two-car garages have a pitched roof, but you can choose one with a flat roof. Such a project reduces the cost of construction, but eliminates the possibility of using attic spaces.

Flat roof garage

The angle of inclination is selected depending on the height of the snow cover; the more snow, the greater the angle. In addition, rafters should be made of more durable materials. Great attention should be paid to water drainage - the garage has a large roof area, and all flows are directed in one direction. It is recommended to place the building in such a way that rain and melt water is drained outside the site.

The size of a 2-car garage can be significantly reduced if you do not build it separately, but attach it to existing buildings.

Attached garage

The building has a common wall. If this option was provided for at the stage of building the house, great; a common foundation is made for both structures. This arrangement eliminates the appearance of cracks between the façade walls. If the garage extension is built later, then a complex of complex construction measures should be taken to connect two separate foundations. This must be borne in mind; in some cases, such reinforcements require a large amount of excavation work, and this increases the estimated cost.

Conclusion

The more options are considered when choosing a specific garage for a car, the fewer errors will be discovered during operation. There is no need to rush to make a final decision, optimal sizes should guarantee ease of use, not just cost savings.

It's hard to say whether having two cars rather than one is good or bad. It seems good, somehow prestigious. On the other hand, there are extra costs for repairs and refueling. But the fact remains that if there are two vehicles, then for each of them you need to build a separate garage or make one double. In this case, both cars will be side by side, and there will be one room. After all, if you rent parking spaces in the city, it is not always possible to find two adjacent ones in the same cooperative.

Before building a two-car garage, we recommend reading this article.

Creating a project (plan)

Before you start construction, you need to know the dimensions of your cars.

Let's start with their length. The length of the garage should take into account the dimensions of a larger car. For example, if it is planned to drive a car for cargo transportation and a passenger car there, then it is clear that in terms of volume the cargo carrier (for example, a Gazelle or the same Ford) will be both longer and taller than a foreign passenger car.

What do you need to know when creating a two-vehicle garage plan? On the plan it is necessary to mark the locations of windows, doors, gates, and the place for opening them (outward) should also be taken into account. The length of the building should not be exactly equal to the car, because you still need to go to the gate and close it (if it is swinging). But doing this if the car hood is practically next to them is not convenient.

A garage for two cars can be of the following type:

  • single-section;
  • into two sections.

The first option is convenient only if there is room to turn around. In this case, the building will look like this: four walls, one gate (on the edge or in the center), several windows at the request of the customer and a door (to the courtyard or directly at the gate). At the same time, this is not very convenient if the room is small - in order to drive out a car parked at the end, you will have to drive the one at the edge. Then you will need to put this machine in place. Absolutely inconvenient!

A garage that has two gates for each car to enter will look much better. Moreover, between them you can put a partition with a doorway. Moreover, if dimensions cars are different, garages for each of them may have a common roof, but different sizes, or even different in height.

Construction begins with the construction of the foundation. You can dig trenches under it, into which foundation blocks will be placed or poured concrete mixture, pre-reinforced. If you plan to make a repair pit or basement, then it is worth digging a pit, also using concrete blocks.

The load on the foundation is calculated based on the following data:

  • the thickness of the walls and the material from which they are made;
  • weight of the floor (wooden trusses, concrete slabs or something else);
  • presence (if provided) of a beam crane.

Walls are erected from materials such as brick, shell stone, cement blocks, foam blocks and similar material. You can immediately leave holes in them for ventilation, exhausts and, if any, sewerage and water supply (if you plan to do repairs in the garage, you will need to wash your hands there or rinse off sand from parts).

It would be nice to make an armored belt along the top of the walls. This is a special design that will give them strength. It is made by pouring concrete into the formwork installed on top and laying a reinforced frame. If wooden trusses are provided as a roof, you can pre-install embedded parts for them in the reinforced belt.

As mentioned, floor slabs are suitable for roofing; you can order them or make them yourself, as well as wooden trusses, on which a covering (slate, corrugated sheeting, metal tiles) will be laid over the sheathing. If you decide to lay slabs, then they must either be tarred (coated with bitumen or something like that) or covered with trusses. Nowadays it has become popular to use metal trusses. With appropriate anti-corrosion treatment, they become more durable than wood, which is susceptible to rot and termites.

Finishing

After carrying out the electrical work, you can start finishing. The ceiling can be whitewashed (painted), covered with pressed wooden sheets, or a suspended ceiling installed. The main thing is that it does not deteriorate from dampness, which will still be present to a certain extent in the garage. The walls are plastered and covered with a thin layer of putty. Then they are painted with water-based paint or ceramic tiles are glued to them. Floor - a cement-sand screed is made to level it. You can also put a stable tile on it that will not crack under the weight of the machine (but in no case will it be slippery).

If the gate is made by hand, it is best to insulate and sew it up, and the metal should be primed and painted. If they are automatic, then nothing is needed. You can insulate the walls (with foam sheets, 50mm thick), then apply reinforcing mesh and exterior finishing (bark beetle, plaster or something else). As a result, we get a convenient and warm garage, in which it will be convenient to park two of your cars.
